How to: Shop AliExpress (and not get burned)

How to Shop for Clothes on AliExpress

AliExpress is China’s version of Amazon, peddling everything from cheap designer knock offs and inspired styles, trendy fast fashion, and high end designer items. I often link to AliExpress for clients that are on a budget or looking for stylish, cool street wear. However, I always recommend you don’t go navigating AliExpress on your own - it’s far too easy to get burned by shady sellers who never ship, clothes that look nothing like their photos, or items that feel like they were made for dolls, or they take months and months to arrive.

Since we’re all shopping online these days with no timeframe of when we truly NEED things, it’s a good time to venture into the cheap and chic world of AliExpress. But FIRST, you need some basic tips and rules to follow.

Tip 1:

ALWAYS read the reviews. I don't buy anything that doesn't have reviews from AliExpress and I try to be cautious on Wish, SheIn, and Romwe too. If you don't read the reviews your product could come and be a tragically made knock off of the image you were given in the product description. I tend to only purchase items I’m confident about and that has 4 stars + reviews AND some photos from customers, ensuring that the product is what it seems.

Tip 2:

Be extra cautious with whites; too many times I've bought white clothing from these Chinese-made retailers only to have them arrive and be so sheer and I can't wear them anywhere but the beach! Be extra cautious with these light colors, or if you're nervous, skip them all together and splurge on a higher end version. Again, check the reviews and photos to see if the item is as sheer or opaque as you are wanting it to be.

Tip 3:

SIZE UP. Items coming from China are made for, well, petite Asian women. Review the size guides of any item you’re buying carefully. I’m semi-petite but tall, and I always size up and am incredibly careful with buying pants, as they are likely to come up short (pun intended). I will say, though, that I am always recommending these paper bag pants to everyone and they are absolutely great.
