How to Dress for School Drop-Off (From an LA Personal Stylist for Moms)

Preschool drop-off might be a ten-minute errand, but it’s often the only time you’re surrounded by other adults before 10 AM. You deserve to feel good about how you show up even if you’re running on cold coffee and chaos. You don’t have to choose between “put together” and “practical.” With the right formulas, you can show up as both even on the mornings your kid refuses to wear shoes.

  1. Lean into elevated basics.
A polished pair of joggers, a cropped boxy tee, and chic low profile sneakers go a long way to looking put together. Examples:

    • Tailored barrel leg joggers or relaxed trousers instead of worn-out leggings

    • A soft, structured tee or lightweight knit instead of your old oversized sweatshirt

    • Cool low profile sneakers or chic slip ons (like the Birkenstock Bostons) instead of running shoes from 2017

  2. Layer strategically.
Layers are your best friend in LA mornings; it can be chilly before the sun comes up, but warm by 9:30. A well-chosen layer instantly makes any outfit look intentional.A denim jacket, bomber, or oversized blazer instantly makes any look “intentional”, yes even your athleisure look or sweatpants, and can even hide some sleep deprived wrinkles that you haven’t steamed out (and let’s be real, probably won’t).

  3. Keep a go-to uniform.
The look should be something you feel comfortable yet confidently YOU in. Mine? Barrel jeans, a vest top, and cute sandals with some intentional gold jewelry.

Stylist tip: Once you find your “go-to” combination, you can swap individual pieces seasonally — same formula, fresh look.

  4. Add one personal touch.
A bright lip, a silk scrunchie, a fun tote; something that says “you” and is memorable amid the mom shuffle. You will never catch me without a mauve lip, even if I’m skipping mascara.

You don’t need to spend an hour in front of the mirror to feel put together. With the right elevated basics, strategic layers, and a signature go-to formula, preschool drop-off can feel stylish, confident, and dare I say enjoyable.
