Your Guide to ELEVATED Game Day Style

Your Guide to ELEVATED Game Day Style

This past spring I was invited to game 5 of the NBA Playoffs. Like any sartorially inclined person my first question was WHAT DO I WEAR!??

If you’re like me, or if you’re a sporty girl just trying to look “cuter” for the big game, this guide is for you!

I’m not a “sporty” girl and going to sporting events is not quite my forte - I have a few pairs of shoes that work for the go-to teams I support but I don’t maintain a collection of cheesy cotton tee shirts with a team logo. I consulted the internet and InstaGram - my favorite way to crowdsource cute outfit ideas - and came up with something that worked and felt “me”. A black bandeau, black leggings ( I would have done leather trousers but #pregnancyproblems), my blue and gold Golden Goose sneakers, and a blue denim YSL shacket. I also made a mad dash to buy a pink rhinestoned basketball purse that was the glam piece to complete my look.

While at the game I did what any stylist did; I people watched others to see what looks I was loving and took mental note. Now, here I am to share my findings and thoughts on what the most stylish people are wearing to a sporting event.

The Elements:

Like I mentioned, you don’t need a cotton logo or branded tee shirt to look cute for a sporting event. Grab a few pieces in your team’s colors that you can utilize in other areas of your wardrobe but that can be go-tos if you get a call to join for a game. This includes shoes, jackets or shackets, and maybe a purse!

The Formula:

Start with basics or monochrome; You can add some trend forward stylish elements like wide leg leather trousers, cute jeans, or a chic but not too revealing dress. Going in summer? Bike shorts over denim cut offs will give you that stylish edge. Top the look off with your team color elements!

The Cute Superfan:

Want to REALLY rep the team but still look cute? Add a team hat! It can be much more flattering than a tee shirt.

You can also wear a jersey dress; this can be done super cute with boots and is a bit “louder” and bolder than a tee shirt making it more of an intentional dressing.

Another option is to try to show off your tenure as a fan; look for vintage team pieces; an oversized letterman jacket, a 90s championship tee, etc. These are much more stylish than wearing a graphic tee from the past few years’ team store or the Target sporting section.

No matter what, elevate, elevate, elevate! If you plan to wear a team logo try to balance it out with heels and trend forward elements.

Elevate your Game Day Style

What not to do:

  • Don’t go overboard in all monochromatic team colors and/or logos- this can look too ostentatious and doesn’t look as cute for the pre-game or after party at a bar or event space. You want your look to transcend the stadium!

  • Unless its your m/o and style, don’t dress too basic - skinny jeans and a logo tee shirt will have you blending in with every other woman who just “threw something on”. You’re here to elevate that game day style!

  • Don’t wear too many designer logos! I see people want to show off their wealth but a sporting event isn’t the place. If you want to wear something designer go subtle; a classic go-to bag or subtle luxury sneakers, paired with basics and neutrals to balance the look out. In addition, sporting events are full of rowdy fans drinking beer and eating greasy, stain-loving foods. Protect your luxe goods as best you can by keeping them at home.

  • Don’t wear outdated styles just because they’re the team’s colors. I see too many clients and people have their go-to team leggings, but leggings as pants are out.

  • Don’t skip layers - these can help your look transition from cutie at the game to cutie at the party effortlessly.

  • Don’t go completely team-less! What I mean is, don’t just wear neutrals to not rep a team at all; go to the game and at least TRY to show some team spirit, otherwise you will look completely out of place.
